Design Structure - Nationwide Hastings
Cantilevered & Truss-Out Scaffold Solution for Constrained Urban Building
Tiger Scaffolding LTD was appointed to design and install a complex scaffolding solution to facilitate external repair and refurbishment works to a multi-storey building located within a restricted town-centre environment.
The project required safe access to all elevations while overcoming significant constraints at ground level, including limited footprint availability, public interfaces, and architectural projections.
Project: Design access scaffold for refurbishment purposes over highway
Sector: Commercial
Location: Nationwide, Hastings, East Sussex
Client: Blackford Group
Services Provided: Design, Supply & Installation of Temporary Access Scaffolding
The Challenge
This project presented several technical challenges:
• Restricted ground access, preventing conventional base-supported scaffolding in key areas
• Requirement to scaffold over lower roofs and adjacent structures
• Public-facing elevation, demanding enhanced safety controls
• Irregular building geometry requiring non-standard scaffold geometry
• Need to maintain safe pedestrian routes and site access throughout
A traditional façade scaffold was not feasible across all elevations due to these constraints.
Our Solution
Tiger Scaffolding LTD delivered a bespoke, design-led scaffold system, incorporating a combination of cantilevered truss-outs, splayed standards, and hanger scaffolding techniques.
The solution included:
• Cantilever truss-out sections to provide full façade access where ground support was not possible
• Splayed standards to manage load paths and accommodate architectural setbacks
• Hanger arrangements fixed from primary scaffold lifts to support working platforms below
• Multiple boarded working lifts to suit phased works
• Integrated edge protection and debris netting to protect the public and adjacent properties
All elements were carefully coordinated to ensure structural stability, safe load transfer, and full access for follow-on trades.

Our outcome
The completed scaffold provided:
Safe, uninterrupted access to all required elevations
A stable and compliant solution despite severe space constraints
Protection for the public and adjacent properties
A tidy, professional installation suitable for a high-visibility location
The project was delivered safely, on programme, and to the client’s satisfaction.

Design & Planning
Due to the complexity of the scaffold configuration, the works were planned in detail prior to installation.
This included:
• Site-specific scaffold design and sequencing
• Consideration of imposed loads and access requirements
• Coordination with the client and other trades
• Temporary works planning where required
The scaffold was erected strictly in accordance with the approved design and method statement.
Our Experience
This project demonstrates Tiger Scaffolding LTD’s capability to successfully deliver complex scaffolding solutions where conventional methods are not suitable.
We regularly undertake projects involving:
• Cantilever and truss-out scaffolding
• Hanger scaffolds
• Restricted access environments
• High-risk and public-facing locations
• Design-led and engineered access solutions
Safety & Compliance
Safety was a critical factor due to the scaffold’s proximity to public areas and occupied buildings.
Key safety measures included:
• Project-specific risk assessments and method statements
• Cantilever and hanger elements installed by competent operatives under supervision
• Full debris netting
• Formal scaffold handover and statutory inspections throughout the project
• Ongoing monitoring due to the design nature of the scaffold
All works were carried out in line with NASC guidance, TG20 where applicable, and the Work at Height Regulations.
